THE CRANE PROJECT
|
The objective of this project is to fold one thousand origami cranes that will be signed by women and children who are victims of violence. I hope this project brings more awareness of just how much danger and fear our mothers, daughter, sisters, aunts and girlfriends have lived with and continue to live with today. Each crane will signify women and children who are victimized everyday, who have fought through the fear and pain and told their stories and continue to tell them.
Humanity must not turn a blind eye to women and children:
-who live in fear thinking they are alone.
-who lose their dignity and are not safe in their own
home.
-who have a right to receive pleasure without
justifying their reasons for saying yes or no.
-who lose their lives defending what is rightly theirs.
Humanity must care for those whose body and soul are hit, slapped, degraded, humiliated, mutilated, sold for sexual pleasure, held without permission, denied education or used as if they were property.
In the end these cranes will have been signed by women and children who have taken their lives back from violence and who are still struggling to come back from darkness. Some of the cranes will have case numbers to represent women and children who have been abused and no one has answered for these crimes. Some will be left blank for women and children who have disappeared who have lost their lives whose voices we may never hear.
These one thousand cranes will be placed on a statue of a woman taking flight to freedom.
